The other day I received a survey in the mail from a hospital that treated me for a mild eye condition. I think I was having a problem seeing way too much. Anyhow, they couldn't correct THAT problem but did give me the usual prescriptions for dry eye and irritation. The dry eye stuff worked but I still get irritated quite a bit.
The survey asked me to rate the quality of service I received at the hospital. I filled it out and mailed it back without any irritation. Then I had thought. Wouldn't it be a great idea if every place you patronized sent you a survey based on your visit there. Think of the concept. You'd be able to check off exactly how you felt each time you walked into your convenience store and the twit behind the cash register is on the phone talking while they wait on you. Check off the box that asks how your service was. A. Great.
B. Fair C. So so. D. It really sucked.
They should have a survey for supermarkets and discount department stores that have a gazillion cash registers but only four are open when it's busy. A. Did you get through the line easy enough. B. Did you get through the line less than easy enough.
C. Did you get through the line during this decade.
Then there's the survey that should be sent out from service stations. A. Was the price you paid for gasoline reasonable. B. Was the price of gas you paid somewhat reasonable. C. Was the price of gas paid for by taking out a bank loan.
Then finally, one of my favorite places, the casino, has installed new ATM machines which charge you more than the old ATM machines used too. Get this, if you take out $100 it now costs you $4.00. If you withdraw higher amounts, the fees increase drastically. I believe $500 will cost you $29.00 to use the ATM. What's wrong with this picture? So, my final request would be that the casino's send out a survey on their new ATM machines. Something like. A. Do you think you will be using our new ATM machines again: 1. Yes. 2. No 3. Are you F*****g crazy!
NOW I think I really am irritated. (reaching for my prescription)

The Weight Loss Conspiracy
Recently I have acquired a few extra pounds much to my dismay. So I casually mentioned to my other half that I would like to begin some sort of diet to lose the extra weight due to the fact that most of my jeans do not seem to want to adhere to my body any longer. Her suggestion was to start eating sensibly. Perhaps lay off the goodies, (my entire mouth consists of not one, but several sweet tooth's) and eat something like Special K for breakfast rather than the cereal I've been consuming. For the record, I've been, (sigh) addicted to Lucky Charms and Golden Crisp cereal. Hey, what can I say, they give me the sugar boost I need in the morning to jump start my body. Anyhow, I agreed to buy a box of Special K the next time we went shopping and give up the other cereals.
So off we went to Walmart yesterday and did our grocery shopping. I reluctantly picked out my one box of Special K, and did my assigned chore of pushing the cart around the store for the rest of the shopping process. At the checkout there mysteriously appeared a box of multi flavored donuts, one box of coffee cakes, two bags of potato chips, fig newtons and a large jar of Planters Honey Roasted peanuts. I assume my other half chose these items based on her particular cravings. But I began to wonder what was wrong with this picture. Here I was staring at my one box of Special K cereal which is supposed to help me lose weight, and there surrounding that one box, all kinds of goodies. This wasn't going to be easy.
The following morning as I poured my Special K cereal into the bowl and sparingly, just to ease into the withdrawal from Lucky Charms and Golden Crisp, I sprinkled one measly teaspoon of sugar on top of the flakes of cereal in my bowl. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" she cried out to me. "YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO PUT SUGAR ON SPECIAL K!"
I sheepishly agreed with her and sat myself down at the breakfast table with a sigh while she began to wolf down two chocolate covered donuts and a coffee cake.
Have you seen the commercial on television with Ben Stein where in the background there's some guy pounding someone on the head with a huge hammer? It DID cross my mind that morning.

Thank Gawd Fer Spel Chek
Reflecting back on my high school years I can honestly say that I was not the brightest student in any of my classes, with the exception of Art class and Woodworking. Didn't take much effort on my part to pass those two with flying colors. I hated Math with a passion, and it was only until the advent of the calculator that I was actually able to balance my checkbook. English was my second worst subject. Hell, I wanted to be a disc jockey and have all kinds of fun so my theory was, why the heck do I need to learn all of this other useless stuff. Then came my passion for writing. Were it not for the spell check function on all word processing programs in my computer, I'd be stoopid. So bear with me here.
I still don't understand the English language. There are way too many variations for me to comprehend. Take for instance the way certain words are spelled. Psychiatrist or Psychologist should be spelled Sychistrist and Sycologist. What's with using the "P" when it sound like it should be an "S." And those silent letters in some words, like "salve." Yeah, I know, if you drop the "L" it's save so who ever thought up the product figured they'd better throw an "L" in there so we'd know the difference. But there's more. Xerox, should be Zerox. The word "pray" means one thing while the other word "prey" means another. Drives me absolutely crazy. Then there's "liquor" and "licker." Aghhhhh!
I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Fortunately for spell check I can manage to write these blogs without looking up each and every word. The only other problem I have is putting them all in the correct context using the punctuation marks where they belong. That's where my editor comes into the picture. So at that point, when I'm finished writing each day, my editor cleans up my mess.
So, with that said, I'm quit confident dat whatever I spel wrong in my bloogs each day will be corected by my competient editor and therefore I wil not look like a complete idiot. Unless of course she has an off day too.

Monday Morning Writers Block
Some days, especially Monday's, it's hard for me to find something to write about. It's not that Monday's are any different than any other day of the week considering I'm retired and one day just blends into another. I think Monday's are difficult due to the fact that for years it signaled the beginning of the work week and I, along with millions of other people, hated going back to work on a Monday. My last place of employment, before I retired, started my work week on a Sunday. That really wasn't so bad because it in essence eliminated the Monday factor and along with that, Thursday was my last day of work so I could lie in bed on Friday's and snicker at the thought of everyone else heading out to work.
The drawback of all this is that I am not in daily contact with coworkers or management. Management alone could fill my blog page each and every day. We all know that a lot of management personnel are not the brightest crayons in the box. I think that for a lot of us Monday's were awful too because along with our grumpy trek to work, management also had a grumpy trek to work. Perhaps, in their frustration, knowing they had full control over their employees, each and every one of them plotted ways to vent their foul moods each and every Monday by taking it out on the staff. I found particularly interesting that the most stupid management memos were posted on Monday mornings. Things like, "Whoever posted a memo on the company memo board without going through the permission memo process can not freely post a memo." Or, "Food left in the refrigerator unmarked will be thrown out." I think that particular manager had way too much time on his hands. Either that or he was very hungry and got tired of rifling through lunch bags for food. My favorite management memo on a Monday morning was, "Please initial this memo so that I know that you have read it." There was nothing else on the memo other than that!
So, here we are confronting another Monday. A majority of you are off to work while I sit here blogging on and on. I am comforted by the fact that I do not have to face those Monday morning memos. Just the list of things my other half has written down for me to do today. But you know, she IS the brightest crayon in the box. At least in MY crayon box.

DOES THE WORLD END IN 2012?

The Mayan calendar abruptly stops in the year 2012. There has been much speculation as to the reasons why. Most prominent, that the world comes to an end so the Mayan's all agreed, why make a calendar for 2013 when no one would be around on the face of the earth to use it. Makes sense to me what with printing costs and distribution back in those days. Geez, it must have been a real effort chiseling an entire twelve month calendar into stone and then marketing it at various cave and monument sites.
Now I'm not in the least bit worried about the world coming to an end in 2012. That would put me at age 70. With the possibility of aging comes all kinds of aches and pains, drooling, Depends, Medicare parts A,B,C,D,E,F,G, and so on that cuts into my monthly paltry Social Security check, and finally, the horror of discovering another place on my body that hair has decided to grow, with the exception of my head, is just too much for me to take. So I'm not in fear of the world ending in 2012. That is of course unless I hit the lottery at which point I could afford all those Medicare plans and plastic surgery too.
For my part, I do not intend to spend the next two years worrying about the end of the world in 2012. You know that from now until 2012 there will be constant reminders of the impending doom in all areas of the media. Those of you who tend to be worry wort's will undoubtedly work yourselves up into a state of extreme frenzy by the time 2012 rolls around and most likely be on medication. Nope, not me. I'm on enough medication as it is. Besides, I recently watched a movie entitled, "Knowing" starring Nicholas Cage which basic plot is that he discovers that the world is coming to an end. In one millisecond everyone is wiped off the face of the earth. I equate that to sneezing. So I figure, if I can sneeze in a millisecond, what the hell am I going to feel if I'm wiped off the face of the earth in the same amount of time that it takes for me to sneeze. So why worry about it.
I just hope that when the time comes, if the Mayans are correct, that I'm sitting in front of a slot machine at a casino, my favorite place. I just hope that at that very exact moment, when the world ends, I do not hit a jackpot. Boy would I be pissed.

VINYL MAKING A COMEBACK

YES, IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING. WE'RE REVERTING BACK TO THE 50's AND 60's WHEN VINYL RECORDS WERE HOW WE ALL LISTENED TO RECORDED MUSIC. YAY!!! I OF COURSE GREW UP DURING THE MANY CHANGES FROM ACETATE RECORDINGS (78'S) TO VINYL (45'S & LP's) TO 8-TRACKS, CASSETTES, CD'S AND OF COURSE THE CURRENT I-PODS AND DOWNLOADS. I SUSPECT THE NEXT THING WILL BE VIRTUAL DOWNLOADS DIRECTLY TO YOUR BRAIN VIA AN IMPLANT LICENSED BY ASCAP OR BMI, THE MUSIC LICENCING COMPANIES THAT KEEP TRACK OF THE ROYALTIES FOR THE ARTISTS.
ANYHOW, HAVING A GAZILLION VINYL RECORDS IN MY BASEMENT, ALL FILED AND INDEXED, I FEEL ONCE AGAIN THAT I AM IN THE MAINSTREAM OF THINGS WITH THE RESURGENCE TO VINYL. SOME MAJOR OUTLETS SUCH AS AMAZON, BORDERS AND BARNES & NOBLE ALREADY HAVE ADDED VINYL TO THEIR SELECTIONS.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED HOLDING A VINYL RECORD IN YOUR GRUBBY LITTLE HANDS, IT'S A VERY MOVING EXPERIENCE. FOR INSTANCE, I HAVE A COPY OF AN LP BY "THE THREE DEGREES" WHICH YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF. ONE OF THEIR CHART SONGS WAS, "WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN." OPEN UP THE ALBUM AND IT UNFOLDS LIKE A PLAYBOY MAGAZINE CENTERFOLD. THERE BEFORE YOUR EYES ARE THE THREE FEMALE GROUP MEMBERS WEARING SEE THROUGH OUTFITS BARING IT ALL. TRY ACCESSING THAT ON A CD OR AN I-POD. ANOTHER GREAT VINYL ALBUM COVER IS ONE BY THE "SCORPIONS" WHICH FEATURES A WOMAN IN THE BACKSEAT OF A CAR WITH BUBBLEGUM STUCK TO HER BOOB. NOT THAT IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE RECORD, BUT IT'S CUTE. WON'T FIND THAT ON A CD OR I-POD EITHER. THERE ARE MANY MORE VINYL ALBUMS WITH GREAT ARTWORK ALL OF WHICH ARE BEING MISSED BY TODAY'S GENERATION. I TRIED PEEKING INTO AN I-POD ONCE BUT COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING.
VINYL WAS GREAT. JUST TODAY, I SPENT AN HOUR ALONE WITH MY VINYL COLLECTION. IT WAS VERY TOUCHING. PERHAPS WITH THE RESURGENCE OF VINYL, OTHER THINGS WILL BEGIN TO RESURFACE ONCE AGAIN. DRIVE-INS, FULL SERVICE GAS STATIONS WHERE THEY ACTUALLY CHECK YOUR OIL, CLEAN YOUR WINDSHIELD AND (GASP) PUMP YOUR GAS, THE MOM AND POP STORE THAT SOLD PENNY CANDY, RECORD HOPS WITH ACTUAL RECORDS, STICK SHIFTS ON ALL CARS WITH AUTOMATICS AN OPTION, TELEVISION WITH RABBIT EARS, NEWSPAPERS THAT REPORT THE NEWS INSTEAD OF GOSSIP AND HONEST POLITICIANS, ....UM, WELL, MAYBE THAT'S PUSHING IT A BIT.
VINYL IS BACK, AND THAT'S ENOUGH FOR ME. NOW IF I COULD ONLY GET THESE DAMN RABBIT EARS TO WORK.

FOX WANTS TO PULL THE PLUG ON FOOTBALL
THERE IS A DISPUTE BETWEEN TIME WARNER CABLE AND FOX WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE RESOLVED AS OF THIS BLOG POSTING. THE DISPUTE CONCERNS HOW MUCH TIME WARNER CABLE INC. PAYS FOX OWNER NEWS CORP. TO RETRANSMIT SIGNALS FROM 14 TV STATIONS IN VARIOUS MARKETS. IF THIS DISPUTE IS NOT RESOLVED, IT COULD JEOPARDIZE VIEWER'S ABILITY TO WATCH TODAY'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL SUGAR BOWL ON TELEVISION. I PERSONALLY AM NOT A FOOTBALL FAN BUT I CAN SYMPATHIZE WITH FOOTBALL FANS BECAUSE IF IT WERE BASEBALL GAMES THAT I COULD NOT WATCH DUE TO THE DISPUTE, I'D BE UP IN ARMS AND GATHERING A MOB WITH TORCHES. EVENTUALLY, CABLE COMPANIES WILL FIND A WAY TO SOCK IT TO US ANYHOW BECAUSE WE'RE GETTING WAY TOO MUCH FREE ACCESS TO TELEVISION PROGRAMS WITH BASIC CABLE SERVICE. THAT'S A GIVEN. SO I DECIDED TO LOOK OVER MY CABLE LISTINGS AND SEE JUST WHAT I WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY FOR IF THEY START CHARGING A FEE FOR EACH CHANNEL. THE LIST IS AS FOLLOWS:
ONE LOCAL NEWS CHANNEL SO I CAN KEEP UP ON THE CONTINUING SAGA OF HOW THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT IS CONSTANTLY RUNNING OUT OF MONEY EVEN THOUGH TWO CASINOS REGULARLY SENDS THE STATE MUCHO DOLLARS FROM SLOT REVENUE EACH MONTH.
THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL SO I CAN CONSTANTLY DISCOVER NEW THINGS HAT I HADN'T DISCOVERED BEFORE.
THE USA NETWORK BECAUSE "CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME" AND A LOT OF PEOPLE KEEP TELLING ME, "YOU'RE A CHARACTER"
THE LIFETIME NETWORK BECAUSE I'VE WATCHED IT ALL OF MY LIFETIME SO WHY GIVE IT UP NOW. AT 67 HOW MUCH LONGER WOULD MY LIFETIME BE ANYHOW.
ANIMAL PLANET BECAUSE I HAVE FIVE CATS AND I NEED ALL THE ADVICE IN THE WORLD ON HOW TO GET OVER CAT ALLERGIES.
THE HISTORY CHANNEL BECAUSE I THINK I MAY HAVE MISSED OUT ON A LOT OF HISTORIC MOMENTS DURING THE 60'S WHEN I WAS A DISC JOCKEY AND SMOKING POT WAS NECESSARY.
CNN NEWS ONLY BECAUSE I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THEY HAVE A GUY NAMED "WOLF" DOING THE NEWS.
THE TNT NETWORK FOR RE-RUNS OF "BONES." CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF EMILY DESCHANAL'S SEXINESS ALTHOUGH I THINK HAVING SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH HER WOULD BE LIKE HAVING HER DO AN AUTOPSY ON YOUR PRIVATE PARTS.
THE WEATHER CHANNEL SO I KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO RUN OUT AND STOCK UP ON BREAD AND MILK.
NESN. IF YOU'RE A RED SOX FAN. NEED I SAY MORE.
TCM, WHICH IS TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES BECAUSE WHEN I'VE ABSOLUTELY HAD IT WITH COMMERCIALS, I CAN WATCH THEIR MOVIES WITHOUT ANY COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTIONS. (HEH HEH)
AND FINALLY, MY LAST CHOICE, THE TRAVEL CHANNEL. NOT THAT I LIKE THIS CHANNEL OR EVEN WATCH IT, OR COULD EVEN AFFORD TO GO TO ANY OF THE PLACES THEY HIGHLIGHT, BUT I FIGURED THAT IF I EVER HAD TO GO ON THE LAM, IT MIGHT BE A GOOD SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON WHERE TO HIDE OUT. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT HAVE TO BEAT FEET OUT OF TOWN.
SO THOSE ARE MY CHANNEL CHOICES WHICH AMOUNT TO 12 CHANNELS, QUITE A FEW LESS THAN I SUBSCRIBE TO NOW. SO I FIGURE IF I'M ONLY GOING TO GET 12 CHANNELS I SHOULD ONLY HAVE TO PAY BETWEEN $12 AND $20 DOLLARS. THAT'S WHAT MY CALCULATIONS COME TO. THE CABLE COMPANY'S CALCULATIONS PROBABLY WOULD BE THE SAME AS WHAT I'M PAYING NOW......YOU DON'T THINK THEIR GOING TO TAKE A CUT DO YOU?
HMMMM, MAYBE I SHOULD JUST WATCH THINGS ON MY COMPUTER. "WAIT!!!!! THERE'S A CHARGE FOR THAT TOO!!
